Event Time and Date

Tuesday, March 21 2017, 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM

The Japanese Language & Culture club and its members have gotten together to create a place here on campus where those interested in learning the Japanese Language, or are curious about Japan's culture can come by, and gain some insight and knowledge on these subjects.

If you are indeed one of these people, you  may have noticed that coming across Japanese oriented books, or classes isn't easy to come by here in UTRGV. No Japanese language classes are offered, and though the library does offer a few books into Japanese culture, if you are seeking books to study the language you are out of luck.

Our club is an offered solution to that problem. Our clubs goal is for our members to become able to read, write, and speak Japanese. If you don't know a lick of Japanese, don't worry as most of our members are also beginners. beginner courses will always be available in our meetings, and we will study alongside you as you gain more knowledge into the language.

The JLCC's main goal is for our members to be able to pass the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) at level N4. The JLPT consist of five levels. N5 being the easiest, then N4, N3, N2, and N1 being the most difficult. It is a test that is only held twice a year on the first Sunday of December and July, in the city of Houston, TX. July 2nd is the date set for the next test, and if circumstances permit, it is our club's goal to fund raise for the chance to go to Houston to take this test. Of course not all members have to go. It will be your choice whether you decide to take it or not.

Learning the language will be a huge part of the club, but it will not be the only thing we offer. We will also offer small insights into Japan's rich culture. A part of Japanese Culture that we are looking forward to going over is it's unique Kabuki Theater, as well as, its famous legends, both romantic and horror, its myths such as its mythical creatures like the Kappa and the Tengu. Also an insight into Shinto, a religion that originated in Japan.

We are a relatively new club, but we hope to make ourselves known within UTRGV. If this sounds like a club that you'd be interested in joining you are encouraged to drop by and attend our meetings. Our current schedule meets two days out of the week, two hours out of each day.

From January 24th to February 2nd meeting times are to be Tuesdays & Thursdays 2pm - 4pm STAC 1.112C

Starting February 7th the times will be changed to Tuesdays & Thursday 12pm - 2pm.

Also now if you can't come to our meetings in person we will be broadcasting our meetings live through Skype!
